Granite worktops add a wow factor to a kitchen or bathroom because they exude class, luxury and taste. It’s the beautifully polished finish of granite that first catches the eye, but the first thing people usually touch is the edge.
The edge for your granite worktop is an important consideration, because it is the only customisable part of the slab. Some people assume the edge profile of granite is determined by the company they order from, but this isn’t the case, or at least it isn’t with us. For stonemasons like ourselves, profiling the granite slab is something we take great care with and we’re always happy to profile it to the customer’s request.
There are 12 main edge profiles we work with. The two most common edge profiles are bevelled and pencil edged. Other profiles include half bullnose, dupont, ogee, cove, waterfall, birds peak, mitred downstand, dupont/covde, and ogee/bullnose. We can also create custom edge profiles for our customers.
A worktop template has to take place on site to ensure that the worktop or worktops are the exact right size for the space and units. A worktop template is a mock-up for the kitchen worktop and is required before any worktops can be installed.
Following the templating process, your new kitchen worktop is cut to match the dimensions of the template before being delivered and installed in your kitchen.
Depending on the shape and size of your kitchen along with the access to the kitchen, some worktops cannot be fitted in one piece. This means that there will be a subtle join between the sections of worktop. If this has to happen, our templaters will measure out the full kitchen area to calculate where the best possible join would be, ensuring that it is as discreet as possible.
The surface the worktop will be lifted on to should be clean and clutter free. It’s important that he cabinets the worktops are to be laid on are as level as possible to achieve the best fit and to avoid any unnecessary packing.
The worktops will be lifted into position by our team of fitters, who will take extra care during the process to ensure no damages are made during the install. Once the worktops have been levelled any joints will be sealed with either a two part resin or a colour matched silicone depending on the material. If you choose to have a stainless steel undermount sink our fitters will secure it in place and seal it to the underside of the worktop. If your sink is a composite or ceramic then these type of sinks need cradling in position prior to install due to the weight of the bowls. Please note our fitters will not touch any plumbing this will be the responsibility of your plumber/ kitchen fitter.
A low modulus silicone is applied to the underside of the worktops to secure them to the cabinets, once the silicone has set along with the sheer weight of the worktops it will ensure a good adhesion.
The silicone will take a few hours to dry so it is advised that the worktops are not used for 24hours to avoid disturbing any silicone especially around an undermount sink. Once it has set, the job is complete. These worktops will last for many years!
